To the Almighty Allah is my profound gratitude for making the publication of this maiden edition of the Student Handbook possible. The demand for it by the students has been long and it is genuine, considering the fact that the handbook provides the students with the basic information they need. In the fast growing age of information technology, characterized with incessant demand for information sharing, the Student Handbook could be described as a "road map" with which the students can successfully pilot themselves through their academic as well as social life in the College. This maiden edition of the book is unique in the sense that it came at a time when the College is witnessing an unprecedented development in all its ramifications. This includes expansion in the College academic programmes, student enrolment, facilities and personnel. The present administration since 2000 has been the driving force behind these positive changes in the College. The foresight of the management led to the creation of the Student Affairs' Division in year 2001, the channel through which vital information could be fast-tracked to and from the students. Through the expansion prgramme of the administration the student enrolment figure rose from barely 2000 in the year 2000 to over 8000. (i.e. 400%) in 2004. This enrolment figure is spread across the six academic Schools plus the Directorate of Undergraduate Studies which was established in 2001. Such large student population from diverse backgrounds, pursuing different programmes in the College, requires a handbook containing adequate information about the College, its academic programmes, organization, functions, rules and regulations. The students should further note that the academic and non-academic staff of the College are hard working, caring and they could offer legitimate assistance to the students. For the purpose of easy comprehension, the information contained in this book is organized in sections and each section focuses on particular subject matter(s). Generally the book exposes the students to extensive awareness of the College as a community. It shows them what is expected of them individually or collectively, at various points of the College operational policies pertaining to registration, hostel accommodation, academic activities, library services, examinations, sporting and other extra curricular activities etc. The book also sensitizes the students about their freedom and fundamental rights in the College, with regard to organizing and running associations, clubs, societies, assembly, publications etc. in a decent manner. The College rules and regulations as contained in this book are intended to ensure the students' safety and to protect them from undesirable practices and influences whose effects could dangerously affect them and their academic pursuit in the College. This is particularly important because among the central duties of the college is the production of professionally trained teachers in character and learning who will in turn, transmit knowledge and the cherished values and aspirations of the Nigerian society to the young generations to ensure sustainable national development. This explains why the College keeps sources of conflict/violence in check so as to enable the students enjoy uninterrupted academic activities each session. It is therefore imperative for the students to cooperate with the management towards achieving this common goal. In view of this every student of the College should have a personal copy of this book, read it and make the best use of it. As a student of the College when you encounter a problem whose answer is not indicated in this book, consult any of the appropriate organs of the College for advice. It is very important to note that every law-abiding student will enjoy the College protection. The College gives equal rights and fair treatment to all her students. The Shehu Shagari College of Education Sokoto is a home of peace, good character and academic excellence. May the Almighty Allah guide you, bless you and make your life in the College a fulfilling experience, 'Ameen'. _________________ Dean (Student Affairs)
