Brief History

Prior to the commencement of academic activities under the auspices of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) by the College, the School existed as Humanities Division. In 1991 when the College affiliated its programmes with the NCCE, the School became School of Arts and Social Sciences. Since then the School continued to flourish bearing this name until in 2013 when the NCCE came out with a new curricular which main objective is to produce functional NCE graduates. Consequently, the nomenclulare of the school was changed to School of Secondary Education, Arts and Social Science Programmes.

Investigation of the relationship between man and his environment both in social and metaphysical contexts so as to come out with ways that will enhance quality of life on this planet forms the principal domain of Arts and Social Sciences.

Objectives

According to the NCCE, (2012), the objectives of the School of Arts and Social Sciences in relation to the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) are:

  1. To produce teachers of Arts and Social Science subjects that can contribute positively to the production of teachers in those subjects for the Junior and Primary Schools in Nigeria.
  2. To assist students to acquire basic knowledge, values and norms needed for improving quality of their lives and that of the nation.
  3. To assist students to acquire balanced personality and imbibe the spirit of self-reliance.
  4. To broaden the horizon of students for life-long educational pursuit.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements into the School are the same for all the subjects under it. The NCCE (2012) gave the following as a general admission requirement in the School:

  1. A Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or G. C. E. ‘O’ Level with credits passes in four (4) subjects at not more than two sittings including English Language and Mathematics
  2. A Grade II Teachers’ Certificate (TC II) with credit or merit in four subjects, two of which must be relevant to the course the candidate wishes to offer. Credit in English and Mathematics is compulsory.
  3. Associateship Certificate in Education awarded by an approved institution in Nigeria or abroad, is also an acceptable qualification.
  4. Successful completion of Pre-NCE final examinations of the College with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 qualifies a candidate for admission.
  5. For candidates wishing to study Islamic Studies in Arabic or English a Senior Arabic and Islamic Studies Certificate or Certificate in Arabic and Islamic Studies or Higher Islamic Studies Certificate from recognized institutions are acceptable provided that they have not less than four credits or merits which must include Islamic Studies and Arabic and credit/merit in English and Mathematics.
  6. All candidates wishing to be considered for admission into the College must enroll for and write the selection examination organized by JAMB.
  7. Candidates will also be required to pass the College’s elimination tests and interviews which are conducted from time to time.
